The Bureau des Doctorants et Étudiants du Muséum (association for master students, PhD students and young researchers of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle of Paris), Doc’up (association for PhD students of the Université Pierre et Marie Curie), Timarcha (association for young naturalists), and Symbiose6 (association for young biologists of the UPMC) are pleased to announce that registration and abstract submissions for the 3rd Young Natural History scientists meeting are open until 30th, November.

The event will be hosted at the MNHN of Paris (France) from the 2nd to the 6th of February 2016.

This totally free conference is dedicated to young researchers in natural history (non permanent researchers such as PhD students, postdocs or master students) who are the only ones allowed to present communications, but senior researchers are very welcome to attend the conference. The meeting will be entirely in English.

We invite contributions in English (either oral or poster communications) on all aspects of natural history represented in these five sessions:

Biodiversity Dynamics and Conservation

any subjects linked to conservation biology and biological diversity. This includes studies of Earth's ecosystems, molecular diversity, distribution, abundance and dynamics of micro- to macroscopic organisms, and their interactions with both other life-forms and/or physical environment. Submissions about philoso- phy and epistemology are also allowed.

Humanities and Natural Sciences

This session is focused on the interactions between anthropological and natural sciences. We consider papers dealing with relations between: modern human societies and their environment (human ecology, ethnobiology, museology of natural history…) ;past human societies and their environment using archaeolo- gical and historical data (physical anthropology, prehistory, interaction between proto-historical/historical societies and nature). Submissions about philoso- phy and epistemology dealing with interactions between natural and human sciences are also welcomed.

Systematics, Evolution and Comparative Anatomy

any aspects of comparative anatomy and morphology, evo-devo, experimental evolution, palaeobiology, taxonomy, phylogenetic and phylogeography, theories and models. Submissions about philosophy and epistemology are also allowed.

Earth and Planetary Sciences

any topics related to climatology, biogeochemistry, cosmochemistry and cosmology, geochemistry, geology, geomorphology, glaciology, hydrology and limnology, mineralogy, oceanography, paleoecology, biostratigraphy, paleobiogeography, palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, taphonomy, petrology, tectonics,  volcanology.

Evolutionary Ecology:

Any problematics related to the mecanisms of evolution in relation with the physico-chemical and biological environment of species. Specifically: life-histo- ry trait evolution (behaviour and anatomic traits), phenotypic plasticity, population genetics, adaptative radiation

A keynote speaker will open each of these multidisciplinary themes with a lecture on a relevant topic.

Registration and abstract submission

We propose free registration fees, including full package and tea/coffee breaks and a free buffet for three lunches.

Deadline for abstract submission and registration is

November 30th 2015 (23:59 GMT+1).

The submission process takes place on the following website: http://ynhm.sciencesconf.org/

A scientific committee has been appointed and will review all the abstracts. If we receive too many abstracts for oral communications only the successful abstracts will be given as talks, the other abstracts will be accepted for poster presentations.

For oral presentations, please keep in mind that the schedule is tight and you have 15 minutes in total (10 minutes of presentation plus 5 minutes for the questions). We will stop you if you do not respect the timing.

We prefer PDF version of your presentation for compatibility considerations. Thank you for your comprehension.

For poster presentations, poster boards are circa 2 m tall and 1m wide; they will not be supplied with power sockets. Each will accommodate an A0-sized poster presented in PORTRAIT format. Poster boards will not accommodate landscape format.

Special events

Photographic contest

The association Timarcha is organizing a free digital photography competition. The aim of this competition is to show images of natural sciences as well as

accounts supporting the conservation of habitats, species and biodiversity. A judging panel will selected 3 pictures for a first, a second and a third prizes. Prizes will be fine art books related with wildlife photography. Prints will be given to the participants after the exhibit (the 10 best will be re-printed and keeped by the BDEM). The exhibit will be shown on 4th February 2016 afternoon. A second exhibit will take place with only the 10 best pictures (according to the judging panel) after the 3rd Young Natural History Scientists Meeting. If you want to submit pictures, please read the rules.

Public conference (only in french)

A conference for the public will be organized on Friday 5th morning, on a current scientific topic. Depending on the speaker, the slides may be translated in english but the communication will be in french to allow schools and non scientists to attend.

Venue and travel

The conference will take place at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, in the Grand Amphithéatre du Muséum the 2nd to the 5th of February 2016.

Some travel grants available for young researchers coming from far away and who can not afford to pay for the trip to Paris. Information about the application to the grants will be available in the next circular.
